Kerala e-Krishi portal, agri trade call centre launched

The Kerala State Information Technology Mission has launched a toll-free agricultural trade call centre and the revamped e-Krishi Web site.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in the city on Monday, the Kerala Agriculture Minister, Mr Mullakkara Ratnakaran, said the portal should help to create a sense of community and spirit of unity among farmers in the State.
The absence of proper guidance on global developments that will impact local agricultural operations is a problem that confronts Kerala's farmers. Initiatives such as this could help solve such problems, he added.
The e-Krishi portal, www.e-krishi.org is a free site and contains information on a number of topics related to agriculture including agricultural prices and trends.
PROJECT PARTNERS
Besides the Kerala State IT Mission, other agencies involved in the project are the National Institute of Smart Government, Hyderabad, Kerala Department of Agriculture and Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Kerala.

WORKSHOP ON BUILDING WEB BASED INFORMATION SYSTEMS USING GENISISWEB

WORKSHOP ON
BUILDING WEB BASED INFORMATION SYSTEMS USING GENISISWEB

Organised by
Digital Library & Information Services
Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management – Kerala (IIITM-K), Thiruvananthapuram

Date: 11 - 12 April 2007
9.30 AM - 4.30 PM

Venue: IIITM-K, Technopark Campus , Thiruvananthapuram – 695581

About the Workshop
Information and Communication Technology has made profound impact on the society in general and in the field of library and information science in particular. Availability of modern ICT infrastructure forced the libraries to offer many of their services over network, especially over the Web. Emergence of e-only resources, requirement from users for e-resources, and availability of suitable communication mechanisms etc have also compelled to provide electronic information services. In order to provide such speedy services, libraries need to equip themselves with different tools, which enable web-based information dissemination.
Provision of Web based information service is costly and some times becomes unaffordable to many Libraries. Alternatively they may depend on free/low cost solutions for web based information services. The workshop will orient and train the participants in establishing and managing such services. The practice sessions will be based on GenIsisWeb. GenISIS is a state-of-the-art package used to create Web interface for CDS/ISIS databases (or it’s different versions) for developing applications like Digital Libraries, Web based catalogues (WebOPAC), e-Journal Gateways etc. GENISIS is based on the Web CDS/ISIS interface WWWISIS by BIREME.

This Workshop focuses on giving a practical orientation to GenISISWeb for creating web based Information Service. Participation is expected from Librarians, LIS Students, Academia and Industry.

Objectives

To give practical orientation to:
Develop bibliographic database using WinISIS
To publish WinISIS Database over the Web
To develop Digital Libraries using GenISISWeb
To develop Web OPAC using GenISISWeb.
To develop ‘e-Journals Gateway’ using GenISISWeb
To learn data exchange using IsisASCII.
To master development and maintenance of Integrated Online Library Information Systems.

Participants are expected to be proficient in using GenISISWeb after this workshop.

Registration Fee

Rupees 750/= OnlyParticipants from Industry Rs. 1500/= Only.
Payments to be made via DD in favour of “Director, IIITM-K” payable at State Bank of India, Technopark Branch.

IIITM-K Library Houses 10,000 Software Products

The software collection in the IIITM-K library has crossed 10,000. These software selected from relevant open sources and journal/magazine CDs are found to be highly useful for various requirements including that of the Institute’s various projects and academic activities. Many applications
that took several days and weeks and laborious effort to build earlier
even from open sources are now made available to install and integrate in
larger systems. IIITM-K library, on realizing this issue, started
collecting relevant freeware / shareware software from different CDs
procured along with different magazines. This software collection is found
to be very helpful in saving time of coding for different projects, make
them focus on applications, for student's academic activities and variety
of other purposes. All the software selected have been analyzed and
categorized based on their applications. Details including name,
description, category, File size, software license type (Freeware,
shareware etc.) CD No. in which the software is available in the Library
etc of all such software products are now available from Online library
Information System (OLIS). The OLIS, an in-house developed integrated
information system for Library resources, has also been enhanced with a
new feature by which one can search books with Classification No. also.
Books are classified using Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme, one of the
prominent international classification systems. For details contact

OLIS Upgraded

Announcement on OLIS Upgrade

There is a major enhancement in the Online Library Information System (OLIS) http://olis.iiitmk.ac.in . [OLIS is an Integrated Library Information System with Online Catalogue of Books with Table of Contents, E-Journals Gateway, Standard Search , Software Library etc. All are developed Using GenISISWeb software and WinISIS Database]

Now you can search the books with classification No (Subject No.) also. We have classified almost all books (Except Java Technology and

books issued to you all). All books are arranged in Library in classified order. Books are classified using Dewey Decimal Classification

System, one of the prominent international classification systems. As Library collection is increasing it is becoming difficult to search and

locate books from Library, hence this new initiative. A demonstration of this will be arranged soon for all Library users.

Please read the following FAQ on how to use this facility.

Qu: How to search with Classification Number?

Now the 'Book Search' interface of OLIS [ http://192.168.0.217/wwwisis/OPAC.01/form.htm ] has one more field called classification

number. You may search with the classification number of a subject eg. 005.43 which will retrieve all books on Operating Systems.

Qu: I am new to this numbers, how do I identify a subject number?

Kindly make a search on 'words in title' field using any of the prominent words in title. Which will retrieve the details of books with Title,

Author, and Class No. At this stage the output will be like this:

Title Operating Systems: Concepts and Design;

Author(s) Milan Milenkovic

Class No 005.43, MIL/O

Note down the first part of the Class No ie 005.43 in above case. Make a search on 005.43 in the Classification No. field. Which will retrieve all books under the subject concerned.

Qu: If I want to get all related books on Operating Systems e.g. Linux, Unix etc? how do I get it.

For getting related books, you need to find out all related Classification Numbers. You can find out all available classification numbers

from the 'Number Index' link shown on right side of the Search box of Classification No.

This will display as shown below, in a select menu

005.43

005.432L

005.432NT

005.432U

005.432US etc

Above all are sub divisions of 005.43

You may click the required numbers for selection and searching.

Qu: What is the advantage of search by Classification Number?

Many of the title does not indicate the thought content/subject of the book, or some title may mislead. Books are classified with subjects,

so all books in that subject will be retrieved while searching. So you need not require to know the exact title.

Qu: How can I locate the book from library?

Identify the Classification No. from OLIS. All books in the Library are arranged in classified order from 000 to 999. Each book is labeled

with the number on it's spine.

Qu: Which are the common/major classification numbers in IIITM-K Library?
