OLIS Upgraded

Announcement on OLIS Upgrade

There is a major enhancement in the Online Library Information System (OLIS) http://olis.iiitmk.ac.in . [OLIS is an Integrated Library Information System with Online Catalogue of Books with Table of Contents, E-Journals Gateway, Standard Search , Software Library etc. All are developed Using GenISISWeb software and WinISIS Database]

Now you can search the books with classification No (Subject No.) also. We have classified almost all books (Except Java Technology and

books issued to you all). All books are arranged in Library in classified order. Books are classified using Dewey Decimal Classification

System, one of the prominent international classification systems. As Library collection is increasing it is becoming difficult to search and

locate books from Library, hence this new initiative. A demonstration of this will be arranged soon for all Library users.

Please read the following FAQ on how to use this facility.

Qu: How to search with Classification Number?

Now the 'Book Search' interface of OLIS [ http://192.168.0.217/wwwisis/OPAC.01/form.htm ] has one more field called classification

number. You may search with the classification number of a subject eg. 005.43 which will retrieve all books on Operating Systems.

Qu: I am new to this numbers, how do I identify a subject number?

Kindly make a search on 'words in title' field using any of the prominent words in title. Which will retrieve the details of books with Title,

Author, and Class No. At this stage the output will be like this:

Title Operating Systems: Concepts and Design;

Author(s) Milan Milenkovic

Class No 005.43, MIL/O

Note down the first part of the Class No ie 005.43 in above case. Make a search on 005.43 in the Classification No. field. Which will retrieve all books under the subject concerned.

Qu: If I want to get all related books on Operating Systems e.g. Linux, Unix etc? how do I get it.

For getting related books, you need to find out all related Classification Numbers. You can find out all available classification numbers

from the 'Number Index' link shown on right side of the Search box of Classification No.

This will display as shown below, in a select menu

005.43

005.432L

005.432NT

005.432U

005.432US etc

Above all are sub divisions of 005.43

You may click the required numbers for selection and searching.

Qu: What is the advantage of search by Classification Number?

Many of the title does not indicate the thought content/subject of the book, or some title may mislead. Books are classified with subjects,

so all books in that subject will be retrieved while searching. So you need not require to know the exact title.

Qu: How can I locate the book from library?

Identify the Classification No. from OLIS. All books in the Library are arranged in classified order from 000 to 999. Each book is labeled

with the number on it's spine.

Qu: Which are the common/major classification numbers in IIITM-K Library?
