National Workshop On Developing Online Tutorials for Information Products and Services

29-30 November 2008

Organised by

Digital Library & Information Services
Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management – Kerala (IIITM-K), Thiruvananthapuram
[established by the Govt. of Kerala]

Venue: IIITM-K, Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram – 695581

About the Workshop

Libraries have been using different Information products like Online databases,e-journals, CD ROM based products, Library automation software, Digital Libraries,Online catalogues, etc. for various services. It is the duty of the Library professionals to train their users on the use of such products having varying functionalities and interfaces, for the effective utilization of these resources, which requires time and efforts from the Library and information professionals. Shortage of adequate manpower in some of the libraries calls for a facility wherein the users can learn about different products and services by the help of online Interactive Tutorials at their own pace. Provision of Interactive Tutorials, enhances the usage of such information products, which might have procured by spending huge amount.

Many institutions organize training on different tools for information services including Digital Library development tools like GenISISWeb, Dspace, Greenstone, Eprint, Library automation software like KOHA, NewGenLib etc. Such training events can also be supplemented with an online, self instructional material with step by step instruction, e.g. an installation guide to Dspace or Cataloguing module of KOHA etc. Such self-instructional materials can be reused by the learner for better understanding of the concerned process/procedure.

This workshop aims to provide a practical exposure on the application of ‘Wink’ a free software for creating different interactive self-learning modules/tutorials for various requirements, including that of information products.

About the ‘Wink’ Software

‘Wink’ is a tutorial and presentation creation software, primarily
aimed at creating tutorials on how to use software (like a tutor for MS-Word/Excel etc). Using ‘Wink’ one can capture screenshots, add explanations boxes, buttons, titles etc and generate a highly effective interactive tutorials.

Using ‘Wink’ one can create online tutorials viewable across the web. Similar applications sell for hundreds of dollars, while ‘Wink’ is free with several unique features including the multimedia capability.

Applications of Wink

'Wink' can be used for various Applications including that of:

  • To demonstrate the working of different Software like LibSys,Dspace, KOHA,WinISIS,MS Word, Adobe Photoshp etc
  • To demonstrate the working of different online/offline databases products like IEEE, ProQuest, ACM, Emerald etc
  • To create Online Tutorials for Education/User Training Purpose
  • To develop Demo of Websites like Library portals/ websites
  • To develop e-learning Modules and self instructional materials
  • To demonstrate the installation/applications of software products like Dspace, Greenstone, GenISISWeb,Libsys etc.

Examples of Online Tutorials Developed Using Wink Software

User's Comments on Wink

"A wonderful tool to produce visual tutorials for free."
- Maria R Malmierca

"I have been helping a client produce some screencasts recently. We trialled a number of products first to see which suited them best One of the ones I really like is Wink, which is a great little free tool. I shall be using more of it" - Jane Hart

"Great tool for creating screen captures and demonstrations." - Robert Chapman

[Source: Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies, UK]

"WINK has empowered Linux gurus to show others how to use and install software, edit config files and setup network connections with a one time presentation. In our opinion, this is far more efficient than sending people to support forums where they will likely find themselves receiving about half of the "how-to" they really need. Beginners learn by seeing and then doing, not just reading about it." -Matt Hartley

The entire details of the seminar can be accessed from this blog available at http://klaseminar2008.blogspot.com/. Through this blog, IIITMK introduced the concept of 'Conference/seminar blog' through which library professionals were updated with the progress of the national seminar from inauguration to valedictory function instantly, as and when it happened. Now this blog is an archive of this National seminar with details of different sessions, papers presented with its PPT and the photographs etc. This Blog provides facility for posting comments/suggestions by the professionals in future also, thereby providing a platform for continued collaboration and academic discussions. Bloging was coordinated by institute Librarian Mr Sainul Abideen, and assisted by Ms Limu PD and Mr Yunus TP, who are working in the Digital Library Division.
